Every Day Feels Like A Week :: A Playlist For Everyday Revolutionaries

A 7-volume playlist of mostly protest music based loosely on the idea of a day feeling like a week.

There is a lot to be angry about. But life continues and we must strive to make the most of it.

This playlist is based on the the idea that each day feels like a week. There is a constant barrage of insanity that has become our “news cycle.” Just as we get angry about the latest scandal, there’s three more. It’s the world’s worst game of whack-a-mole and we’re not meant to live this way. We’re not meant to be inundated by a 24-hour information cycle and our country certainly has not proven to be capable of realizing that the phone call is coming from inside the (white) house. Every day feels like an eternity and a flash at the same time.

The playlists, especially at the beginning and the end, aren’t all protest music. That’s because, despite the avalanche of turmoil, we still have to try and go about our daily lives. We still have to wake up and greet the day; we still have our routines, our obligations, our ups, our downs, and our loved ones. We still have to try and build meaningful and purposeful lives, even while the country burns. It’s not good to be angry all the time, even when it’s justified. Also, in the morning section, I thought I’d have some fun with the idea of waking up in the morning being equated with becoming woke.

We have plenty to be angry about. But I refuse to be like them. This is also why all the “protest music” is not angry. We need to remember the power of love and walk that path.

I hope you enjoy. Or get angry. Or both.

Fire For The People :: A Blue Scholars Playlist

I think I’ve shared this before, but we drive a 12-passenger van. Because, of course we do. What else are we going to drive? The kids broke the AUX input several years ago, but the CD player works. So sometimes we make mixes especially for the van. Sometimes they are various playlists, and sometimes they are artist-specific. One of our favorite artists as a family is Seattle’s Blue Scholars.

I’m not sure if they ever broke up or if they’re just on some weird hiatus, but I don’t think they have released music together since 2011’s Cinémetropolis. Anyways, if you don’t know, them, Blue Scholars are (were?) a politically conscious Seattle hip hop duo. Formed in 2002 while members, DJ Sabzi (Saba Mohajerjasbi) and MC Geologic (George Quibuyen) were both students at the University of Washington. The duo put out 3 full-length albums, 4 EPs and a lot of singles. All of which is worth hunting down while the group is on hiatus(?).

Here’s the releases I drew from:

Fela Kuti & Africa 70, 'Pansa Pansa'

Screen Shot 2020-10-17 at 11.17.21 AM.png

Last week was Fela’s birthday and I’ve been jamming this live ‘Pansa Pansa’ ever since. And since I am a generous person, I thought you might like to jam too.

From the Youtube page:

“One of the few pro-shot concerts of legendary musician Fela Kuti with his band Africa 70, playing for the jazz festival in Berlin, 1978. Fela was a social activist and leader who fought for freedom and justice in Nigeria. He died in 1997.”
