NPR Music Is Finally Catching Up With Habañero Collective
Well hello fine friends, one and all. As you may or may not know, I, along with my great friend Eldon, host house shows as the Habañero Collective (the website is more a place-holder on the world wide webs for house show announcements than anything else. But, to keep the masses interested and coming back for more, I use it as a Tumblr where I post things that fit my fancy). You can stay up-to-date with our upcoming events here (except for the Pawnshop Kings House Show which you can find here).
We have been lucky enough to host some of my favorite concert moments ever. That’s not an exaggeration. House shows have helped reinvigorate my love for live music. For example, our main main Aaron Spiro played a song for us that he had only performed once before. Or the time Chris Bathgate blew our socks off under the Whiten Leaf House lights.
The other day, NPR Music posted a list of bands that they think should be bigger. We were super-stoked (you kids still say “stoked,” right?) to see Habañero Collect House Show Alumns Seryn listed. We couldn’t agree more and we’re excited to see NPR follow our lead in great music. Congratulations to Seryn. We are so excited to watch them take off in 2013.
Don’t believe the hype? Here is the band performing “Our Love” at the Thomas Listening Room, followed by “So Within”:

House Show Tonight!
The Habañero Collective family is super-excited to kick off the 2013 house show season tonight with Karla Adolphe (check her music out on Noisetrade) and Ree Boado (also on Noisetrade). 7:00pm tonight at the Thomas Listening Room. It would be awesome if you could make it. The more, the merrier, right? Come one, come all. Bring family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, snacks and beverages.
An Habañero Collective House Show With The Vespers
As some of you know, I am part of something called The Habañero Collective. This started out as a podcast I did with Mark, a great friend of mine in which we explored and challenged the idea of “Christian music.” Somewhere along the line, we started hosting house shows (yes, actual concerts in homes, for more on this, see this NPR article) and stopped doing the podcast. Instead of complaining that there is no real sense of culture or music scene where we live, we decided to create one. So now we host great bands in intimate settings for wonderful live music. The Tumblr page is just for fun.
We are super-excited to announce a house show with The Vespers, November 5th. If you are in the Phoenix area, I hope you will make every effort to join us. You won’t be disappointed. In case you haven’t heard The Vespers yet, check out their wonderful new album The Fourth Wall and check out this live video of the track “Grinnin’ In Your Face”

Habañero Collective House Shows Past And Future
I used to do a podcast with a great friend of mine. It was called the Habañero Hour and we played a lot of music we liked and interviewed some of the people who made that music. We focused a lot on the relationship between Christian faith and artistic expression.
Then we stopped doing the podcast and started hosting house shows. If you’re not sure what a “house show” is; it’s exactly what it sounds like: we host concerts in homes. We’ve been able to meet lots of those people whose music we played and interviewed for the podcast but since then, the focus has become much broader. We want to help promote the arts in suburban Arizona. Good luck, right? Actually, we’ve been tremendously blessed to host some tremendous house shows (and we want to start partnering with all kinds of other artists as well but we’re not there yet).
In fact, we’re working on scheduling house shows for the Fall right now. We’ve already announced the return of David Ramirez and watch for more announcements soon. In the meantime, here are some great moments from past house shows:

Shawn Skinner: “Charlie and William”
Chris Bathgate: “Big Ghost”
Aaron Spiro: “Are You Coming?”
